On hive worlds across the Galaxy many live poor and harsh
lives, in filth and degradation. Only faith in the emperor sustains them, and in
some cases that faith can be hardened by the conditions in which they live into
a weapon all its own. Many see corruption, immorality and excess around them,
and desire nothing but to see it cleansed. It is these souls who are drawn to
the red robes of the Cult of the Emperor’s Redemption.
The Redemption, as they are more commonly known, are a
numerous and extreme cult, founded on the tenet that the only way for mankind
to be saved is to purge itself of sin, corruption and immorality. Such is the
way of many cults, but only the redemption believes this cleansing should be
achieved by fire.
Founded directly on the Imperial Creed, the redemption has
taken its principles to a further extreme, with all toleration stripped and
discarded, The early redemptionists relished practiced flagellation, fasting
and other acts of self denial, and as the cult grew, they began to impose their
views on others, burning all those who showed any taint of mutation, physic
abilities or sin.
The Crusades
Redemptionists usually act in small mobs, practically
independent of any central control. They maraud through their home planets,
cleansing sin where they see it, and attempting to achieve the Redemption’s
divine purpose; They believe that mankind, in the shape of the Emperor, is
destined to rule the stars, and it is the sin and corruption everywhere that
keeps them from this destiny. Such mobs or gangs are usually led by a Redemptor
Priest, the inspirational clergy to whom the brethren show utter devotion.
On rare occasions, the secretive central leadership of the
cult, the High Priesthood, discovers a nest of sin so horrendous that the usual
mobs of the redeemed will be unable to cope. On such occasions, a call is sent
out to all corners of the galaxy, and a gathering of the faithful occurs. Such
events, known as Crusades, focus the entire might of the Redemption into a
single force, a horde of red for the achievement of a specific purpose. Such
crusades rarely last long, but at their height they are often the match of many
more formally organised armies.
Redemptionist
Crusades have a strategy rating of 2. All Redemptionist Crusade formations have
an initiative rating of 2+.

Redemptor High Priests are the
highest authority in the cult, rarely seen in action in the more common
smaller bands of Redemptionists, but often seen leading the great Crusades. The brethren are utterly
devoted to their High Priests, and will gladly walk into the jaws of death |
at their mere word. Their fervour is renowned, dealing death to mutants, xenos and sinners with equal relish. Uniquely for Redemptionists,
they are often trained in tactical matters, allowing them to lead the
Crusades effectively. |

Redemptor
Priest
|
|||||
The Redemptor Priests are the leaders of the mobs of Brethren which make up the main body of any crusade. To their followers, their word is law, and the fear and awe they inspire is evident. Their verve in battle is only matched by the skills |
they possess in inspiring their
troops. Many foes have been terrified by the sermons they deliver, all while
scourging and purging their way through the enemy masses. Utterly fearless,
they are the bond that holds the brethren together, and turns them into a
dangerous fighting force. |

Brethren
|
|||||
The main body of the
Redemption is made up of the Brethren. They have taken vows of faith, and are
marked with a brand to show they are dedicated to the cause. |
Brethren are usually armed with
simple, short ranged weapons such as autoguns and pistols, often backed up
with flame cartridges known as Exterminators. |

Novices
|
|||||
Drawn from every walk of life,
the Novices are the masses who have pledged themselves to the path of
righteousness. These initiates into the cult face a harsh apprenticeship, but
those who survive will be forged into true brethren, utterly |
committed to the cause. What they lack in discipline,
training and equipment they make up for in faith and sheer expendability. |

Deacons
|
|||||
Deacons attend to the secular
affairs of the brethren. Organising rallies, equipping the faithful and silencing
dissenters; whatever administrative affairs are required are performed by the
Deacons. |
The Deacons are utterly
trusted by the Priesthood, and their service and devotion is rewarded in battle
by positions of responsibility and the best weaponry and equipment available. |

Zealots
|
|||||
For some, the standard fervour
of the Brethren is insufficient. The most crazed and frenzied brothers are
known as Zealots. They are consumed by their hatred, throwing themselves at
the enemy with reckless abandon, with little or |
no regard for their own safety.
They consider themselves the avatars of hatred, fury incarnate. Armed with the huge double
handed chainsaws known as Evicerators, they are a terrifying foe. |

Bikers
|
|||||
Some of the Brethren are so
keen to get to the foe that they ride cobbled together bikes. These dangerous
contraptions are often customised by their riders, with scythed wheels and
similar such extreme devices added. |
Most gangs have only one biker,
but they band together in the crusades to act as advance scouts for the main
force. Many an enemy has been ridden down under their furious wheels. |

Pulpitek
|
|||||
As the cause of seeking out sinners
is central to the Redemption, it is always on the move. It is also often
outlawed, so fixed places of worship are generally eschewed. In their place
is the Pulpitek, a bizarre combination of a troop transport, main battle tank
and a mobile chapel. |
Often made from scrapped
Rhinos and other military transport vehicles, Pulpiteks are extended and
topped with the pulpit after which they are named. From atop these
contraptions, Priests preach, rallying their followers for battle. |

Incineratek
|
|||||
Built on the same cut and shut
rhino chassis as the Pulpitek, the Incineratek is a rarer and more
specialised vehicle. When a nest of sinners is found holed up in cover, the
Incineratek is called in. |
With a vast prometheum tank
and an inferno heavy flamer turret, the vehicle is capable of purifying
sinners at considerable range. It is also armed with an array of short ranged
flamers for close-up cleansing. |

Flakitek
|
|||||
Sinners are not just found on
the ground, they can also sometimes be found in the skies above. The Flakitek is rarely seen in the roving
gangs of the Redemption, but when a Crusade is called for they are a necessity. |
As well as preaching from the
back of a Pulpitek, Deacons can also be found manning the anti-aircraft guns
of a Flakitek. The guns are not fixed skyward though; they can also provide a
useful bank of fire along the ground. |

Penitent Engines
|
|||||
Penitent Engines are used by
the Inquisition as a torturous method to redeem the souls of sinners.
Mechanised death machines that lurch across the battlefield, driven on by the
sinner’s desire for salvation in death, they are a terrifying sight for any opponent. |
However, it is only the
Redemptionists who are fervent enough to voluntarily strap themselves into
these machines. Those who consider themselves guilty of such great sins as
lust, greed or showing their faces may choose to redeem themselves in a glorious
death. |

Cathedral
of Purification
|
|||||
The rarest, and most horrifying
of the Redemption’s arsenal is the Cathedral of Purification. These great
tracked vehicles are fuelled by death, as sinners and their instruments of
sin are burnt in its great furnaces to drive it ever onwards. |
Armed with an array of cleansing
weapons, they are only ever deployed in the great crusades, where they
provide a mobile place of worship and ranged fire support to the faithful
masses. Few have looked upon their gothic façade without feeling genuine
terror. |
